Talk

ING Bank serves 37 million customers in over 40 countries, powered by 2000 microservices behind the scenes.
In this talk, I will share how we scaled our service mesh from 1 to 10,000 running instances across multiple regions and deployment types (containers and VMs) over the past 8 years. I will explain the core concepts that make our service mesh manageable and scalable.
Key topics we will cover:
- Authorization Model: How we handle permissions and enforcement.
- Runtime Considerations: Configuring workloads to ensure observability, resilience, and security in multi-region deployments.
- Staying Up-to-Date: Adopting market standards and keeping our service mesh current.
Takeaways:
By the end of this talk, you will have a thorough understanding of the benefits a service mesh provides in a microservices architecture. You will also learn best practices from ING's 8 years of production experience to apply to your own service mesh.
